Call to Artists: Art on the Avenue - PDF >>

The Manitou Springs Arts Council of the City of Manitou Springs, Colorado, announces a call to Pikes Peak Regional artists for artwork to be considered for the Manitou Springs Public Art Project. The Art on the Avenue Project was implemented in Manitou Springs in 1997. This project enables artists to submit artwork that will be on loan to the City of Manitou Springs and displayed for a minimum of 12 months at various locations along Manitou Avenue, giving artists exposure within our community as well as giving the public a chance to see a changing “gallery” of art. Three-dimensional artwork will be considered for each of the seven pedestals located along Manitou Avenue in Manitou Springs. Up to seven pieces of artwork will be selected and installed in 2008. Currently each pedestal has a steel top on which to affix artwork (please see link to the map of pedestal locations and dimensions).

A stipend of $250 will be awarded to the artist of each of the selected art works. Additional assistance may be available for transportation of artwork upon prior request. The City of Manitou Springs will be responsible for insurance and all installation and costs associated with such.

Criteria: The MSAC is seeking work that is of high quality, durable, and able to withstand varying weather conditions. Colorado’s extreme conditions often include intense sunlight and freezing temperatures mixed with ice and snow. The Council is seeking to display artwork of a diverse and unique range. All artwork will be mounted to a steel base surface and must be able to be removed from that base at the end of contract. All media appropriate for outdoor locations and public display will be considered. The selection review panel will consider the following criteria in its review of submitted artwork: quality, permanence and site compatibility and safety. Artwork to be considered may be work that is completed and available or work to be fabricated before the agreed upon installation date.

Submissions: Artists may submit up to three works of art for consideration. In addition, artists may submit up to four images of other completed and installed work as reference. Proposals should be received by MSAC no later than Wednesday, August 13, 2008 and include the following:

Artist’s name, address, phone number and email address; a description, drawing or photo of the art from different angles, with size, material and dimensions; a description of installation method and maintenance specifications. Submit images on a CD in jpeg format, along with all other required information to:

Manitou Springs Arts Council, PO Box 61, Manitou Springs, CO, 80829.

Timeline:
August 13, 2008: Deadline for submissions
September 17, 2008: Selected artists will be notified
September 22 - 26, 2008: Delivery of artwork
October 18, 2008: Artwalk and celebration of 2008/2009 Art on the Avenue
All works will remain on display until October, 2009 or later, as per artist agreement.
